Visual Comparison at a Glance
English typography uses three distinct horizontal lines of increasing length. While they look similar on a casual glance, they have completely different grammatical roles and Unicode codepoints:
| Mark Name | Glyph | Unicode | Primary Grammatical Job | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyphen | - |
U+002D |

U+2013 |

| Em Dash | — |

1. The Hyphen (-)
The hyphen is the shortest mark and the only one with a dedicated physical key on standard computer keyboards. Its purpose is morphological, not syntactic:
- Compound modifiers before nouns: state-of-the-art facility, user-friendly interface.
- Compound numbers: twenty-five, ninety-nine.
- Clarifying ambiguous prefixes: re-sign (sign again) vs. resign (quit).
2. The En Dash (–)
The en dash is exactly the width of a capital letter N (roughly 1.5 times the length of a hyphen). It represents the word "to" or "through":
- Date & time spans: October 12–15, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
- Numerical ranges: Read chapters 3–7.
- Scores & voting tallies: The team won 4–2.
- Complex compound relationships: London–Paris flight, post–World War II.
3. The Em Dash (—)
The em dash is the widest mark, traditionally the width of a capital letter M. It is a powerful punctuation mark that replaces commas, colons, or parentheses to create emphasis or signal a sudden shift in tone:
- Replacing Parentheses: Three employees—Alice, Bob, and Carol—attended the meeting.
- Replacing a Colon: There was only one problem—nobody had the key.
- Abrupt Interruption in Dialogue: "I was going to say—" she began, before the alarm rang.
Converting Dashes Safely with Text Cleaner
While em and en dashes look beautiful in print, they frequently break legacy ASCII databases, SMS encoding limits, and URL generators. Use our Remove Em Dash tool to convert all em and en dashes into safe, standard hyphens in one tap.
